The statistics around hunger and food waste in America are sad and often overwhelming.

Over 34 million Americans face hunger and approximately 10% of all people in Salt Lake City are food insecure, meaning there is a consistent lack of food to have a healthy life because of their economic situation. Yet we waste 40% of all food here in the U.S.

But what can one person do?

When we began Stone Soup, we focused on feeding the homeless population and we started cooking!

Now, as we have evolved, we are focused on feeding everyone in Salt Lake City who is food insecure. We solicit donations from food suppliers and transport the food to the people in our community who need it most. The food banks are exceptional at providing non-perishable food to the hungry. We fill a gap by providing perishable foods like fruits and vegetables to ensure everyone has access to fresh, nutritious, healthy food. We often get the added benefit of rescuing food that might otherwise go to waste.

The Stone Soup Project

Beginning in May 2016, we started this project by using our own funds and the kitchen at a local restaurant and we prepared nutritious, high-quality meals once a month for the women’s shelter at The Road Home. Others joined us in preparing, delivering and serving the meals. Nicholas and Company generously donated supplies. The Stone Soup Project was born.

Our purpose was to impact the homeless community; young adults, women and families, by providing free, nutritious restaurant quality meals. Our aim was to empower this community by providing meals on a dependable basis so these individuals may focus on a path out of homelessness.

Since the devastation of Covid and the continuing rising inflation and economic challenges, we’ve shifted our focus on not only feeding the homeless population but the many, many people who are strapped financially and are struggling to keep food on the table. Over the years, Stone Soup has served hundreds of thousands of meals and provided thousands of tons of food to young adults, women and families at The Road Home, Volunteers of America Youth Shelter, The Urban Community Center, and Palmer Court.

Having a real impact.

Stone Soup has been a consistent and reliable source of healthy, nutritious, and satisfying food for the homeless and food insecure populations in Salt Lake City for many years and we’re still going strong in feeding the hungry people in our community.

But we can do so much more.

Stone Soup has become a reliable and trusted source of fresh foods. We know we can have an even greater impact on those we serve.

We have one little van - the Stone Soup Care-A-Van - often referred to as the Gila Van which is easily recognized by the populations we serve. We use this van to transport the food with a limited number of drivers.

With more drivers, more vehicles, and more donations,
we can do more pickups, more deliveries, and feed even more people.

We can use one more person. You.

As one person, your donation can have an immediate impact on the hungry populations of Salt Lake City while rescuing food from going to waste. You can also volunteer to help us and you’ll feel firsthand the huge impact we have on the people who experience hunger as a real and pressing issue in our community. Join us today.
